One third of Chicago's homicides and violent crimes occur within five miles of the University of Chicago Medicine’s Hyde Park campus — a homicide rate nearly three times that of the rest of Chicago.

In addition to providing Level 1 trauma services for adults and children, UChicago Medicine is leveraging its position as an academic medical center to promote holistic recovery and research to deepen understanding of traumatic injury and violence. Ms. Battle will describe UChicago Medicine’s Violence Recovery Program (VRP) — the most comprehensive hospital-based violence recovery program in Chicago. The presentation will illustrate steps UChicago Medicine is taking to help patients and their families in the critical moments immediately following an injury and after they've been discharged. She will describe crucial efforts to promote resilience, reduce violence recidivism and promote holistic recovery for improved wellbeing.
